People have been asking....

Hello DX fans!  I have recently been asked by several people as to how they can change my themes to use on their systems. I am going to try to explain my system, if you care to use my system on your machine, it will be very easy to use my themes, and alter them to your own purposes.

Firstly let me say that writing articles/tutorials is not my forte. But I think I can get the message across. I always keep my icons hidden, so I can see my wallpaper.  Let's start by making a new folder on your desktop and call it Desk. Inside this folder, make 8 more new folders. Name them Internet, Customize, etc. A folder for each of the 8 menu buttons you will see in my themes. These folders will contain the extra shortcuts that will not fit in the menus. Fill each of these folders with shortcuts to your most used programs in each catagory.

Now that we have the folder system down, start desktopX in builder mode, this way we can make and save changes. Let's look at the buttons. Usually, there will be 8 menu buttons in my themes. Each one controls a popup menu. Click the Internet button. In the resulting menu, there is a folder shortcut. It may be an icon, folder, or text. Right click that folder shortcut and choose "set target". Browse to the Internet folder in the Desk folder you made on your desktop. Click apply and ok. Do this for each of the 8 menus. Save the desktop. Do this by right clicking on the tray icon and choosing Save Desktop. Do this often in case you should lose power, or DX crashes, as it sometimes does. Now we have the folder shortcuts setup.

Back to the menus. Click the Internet button. This opens the Internet menu. Click the folder shortcut that we just setup so that it opens the folder it points to. Now, you will need to reopen the menu. Drag the most used shortcuts from the open folder, to the open menu. There you have created a shortcut. Do this with as many shortcuts as you can. Usually there's room for 8 or 9. Do this for each menu. Save the desktop again. Ok, now to setup the system folders. These are usually on another dock, or section of the theme. The computer, documents, control panel, printers buttons need no setup as they are usually universal.  Right click the downloads button, choose "set target" and browse to the directory where you keep new downloads. Choose apply and ok. Do this for each of the system buttons.

Now, most of the text on my themes are set to no activation, which means the cursor can't see the text. In order to change the text, hold down the ctrl key and right click the text, choose properties, and here you can change many of the attributes of the text including spelling, color, font, etc.  Also most of the theme parts are locked. If you want to move a locked item you must use ctrl key and drag it to where you want it, but beware. If you drop an item directly over an invisible menu, it will disappear and become a child of that menu. If this happens, open all the menus until you find the lost item, right click the lost item and choose set parent, choose none, or unassigned.

I am sure I've missed something. If so, post here or email me.  Oh also, if you like a docking theme but would rather have it floating so that you can move it to where ever you want it, just right click the object and choose properties. There will be an area that reads Menu and two buttons saying edit/remove.  Choose remove. You will be asked if you are sure, choose yes. Click apply and ok.  Now you have a floating dock. Remember to save your changes, often.  Happy DXing!!!!

Now go here and get something to which you can apply what you've learned!
